Water – it’s not only an essential component of human life but also necessary for a variety of industries that rely on water-handling applications designed for cooling, heating and cleaning processes. However, due to these critical applications
eventually producing wastewater full of impurities, manufacturers are responsible for properly disposing or recycling the wastewater in the most environmentally friendly manner possible while also satisfying strict government regulations. This is
where acids come into play.
As an industrial jack-of-all-trades, acids are used in a variety of applications, including the manufacture of agricultural fertilizers, the production of cosmetics, fluoridation of drinking water, pH adjustments, boiler water pretreatment and cooling
towers. A few of the more common acids used by these applications include hydrofluosilicic acid, hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid and citric acid. Even though these acids provide the high level of versatility needed for proper wastewater
treatment, their aggressive and corrosive nature can be challenging.
If these acids aren’t handled and properly injected into applications with corrosion-resistant, high-performing metering pump technology, they can risk workers' health, affect the safety of operations and negatively impact the environment.

The Neptune Solution For The Acid-Handling Challenge
Neptune® offers a wide range of reliable, efficient and safe metering pump technology designed to properly handle a variety of liquids. None are more suited for the demands of acid-handling applications than the following hydraulic, mechanical and
electronic diaphragm metering pumps.
Neptune 500 Series Hydraulic Metering Pump
Neptune 500 Series Hydraulic Metering Pumps are
designed to handle higher pumping pressures in even the harshest acid-handling conditions, with low energy usage and minimal required maintenance.
Featuring an internal relief valve, the 500 Series provides precise and controlled chemical injection and leak-free operation, making it an ideal option for acid-handling applications.
The 500 Series also offers a Variable Oil By-Pass™ stroke adjustment option for better valve performance and also EZE-CLEAN™ Valves with cartridges that can be removed and cleaned without disturbing the pump’s piping.
The 500 Series is capable of producing up to 94 gallons per hour (303 liters per hour) of flow at 100 psi of pressure (60 gph [227 L/h] if the pump is duplexed) with operational temperatures ranging from 125°F to 200°F (52°C to 93°C) with
maximum pressures from 150 to 3,000 psi (11 to 210 bar).
The 500 Series is available in various materials of construction for the pump head, valves and seats, including 316 stainless steel, C-20, PVC and Kynar®, and valve checks are available in 316 stainless steel, C-20, glass and ceramic.
Neptune MP7000 Series Mechanically-Actuated Diaphragm Metering Pump
Neptune MP7000 Series Mechanically-Actuated Diaphragm Metering Pumps are designed with a straight-through valve and head configuration that provides improved flow characteristics.
The heavy-duty, corrosion-resistant aluminum, finned gearbox design dissipates heat more efficiently than other designs, which makes it ideal for acid-handling applications. The design also eliminates the use of contour plates on the liquid side of the
diaphragm, making the MP7000 Series ideal for handling acids with viscosities ranging from water-like to 5,000 cP.
Rugged bronze gears are quiet-running and provide long service life, while oversize check valves improve performance and minimize friction losses and short stroke length reduces diaphragm stress and promotes longer diaphragm life.
The MP7000 Series offers repeatable accuracy at ±2% at full scale (at constant hydraulic conditions) with flow rates ranging from 10 gph to 450 gph (38 L/h to 1,710 L/h) at head pressures up to 150 psi (10 bar). Explosion-proof, variable-frequency
drive and washdown duty motor options are also available.
Neptune PZ Series Electronic Solenoid-Driven Metering Pump
The Neptune PZ Series Electronic Metering Pump offers wide turndown capability with adjustable stroke length and speed setting, which makes it suitable for low-flow acid-feed applications.
Specifically, the manual stroke-length adjustment ranges from 50% to 100% with proportional control, cycle and counter functions, and 300 strokes per minute allow more uniform distribution at all feed rates. The “pulse” metering design operates
on any single phase voltage from 94 VAC to 264 VAC, while a digital operation display indicates speed, feed rate, status, and other operational data.
Whether it’s hydraulic, mechanically actuated or electronic solenoid-driven, Neptune provides metering pump technology designed to help manufacturers with the challenges of acid-handling applications so they can properly treat wastewater.
